Questions

q

Does Footsteps offer professional mental health services?

Yes. We are a full-service mental health practice with a staff comprised of trained clinicians.

What is Christian Counseling?

Christian counseling combines professional counseling techniques and biblical principles.

Are all your therapists Christian?

Yes. All of our clinicians and support staff acknowledge personal faith in Jesus Christ.

Do I have to be a Christian to use your services?

No. Our services are available to everyone.

How do I refer someone to Footsteps?

Most of our clients find us through referrals from friends, pastors, or physicians, and we always welcome new clients with open arms. If you know someone who might benefit from our services, invite them to contact us at (804) 715-3215.

How do I make an appointment?

Call us at (804) 715-3215. If you have health insurance, please have your card available.

How long do I have to wait to see someone?

Generally your appointment will be within a week or two of your initial call.
Emergencies will be given priority and generally are seen within 48 hours.

May I choose my own therapist?

Depending on the issues you would like to address and the area of expertise of the clinicians, we generally decide on an appropriate counselor for you.  Other factors that are also considered may include:  when you can come in for sessions, the office location you would prefer, or your health insurance carrier.  If you are uncomfortable with the counselor we have chosen for you, you may request a transfer and we will match you with another counselor according to your preferences.

How much does therapy cost?

Our fees are consistent with other mental health practices in the Richmond area.  Cost of services is often dictated by your particular insurance plan and the length of your treatment.  As a non-profit organization, we offer financial assistance to those in need. We can discuss your specific circumstances when you call for an appointment.

Will my visits be covered by insurance?

Most of our clients use health insurance to pay for our services. Since policies and benefits vary, we will contact your insurance carrier before scheduling your first appointment. Clients are responsible for charges not covered by their insurance, and these charges are payable at the time services are rendered.

How long does therapy take?

The length of treatment depends on many factors and is primarily determined by the nature of your issue and your level of motivation.  Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules.   What may be only 1-2 sessions for one person, could take longer for others as there are many contributing factors, such as the severity of your symptoms, or how long the problem has been going on,  that play into the speed of your healing.    It is generally recommended that you continue with counseling for as long as it is helping you.  For some that may only be a matter of weeks and for others, months or years.

Does Footsteps prescribe medication?

No.  There are times when medications may be appropriate and in those cases your counselor will refer you to a physician.
